Programmable atomic Large-Scale Quantum Simulation 2.1

New PASQuanS2 Video Outlines the Path Towards Practical Quantum Advantage in Europe

Quantum technologies are advancing rapidly, and quantum simulation with neutral atoms is emerging as one of the most promising approaches for tackling problems that classical computers cannot solve efficiently. Yet translating laboratory achievements into reliable, industrially relevant tools remains one of the field's central challenges.

To highlight the progress and vision of the PASQuanS2 project, a new video features leading researchers sharing their perspectives on what the project has achieved and where it is headed. The video covers the development of a strong pan-European community collaborating across all levels to build the next generation of quantum simulators, as well as the growth of two notable startups that have emerged from the project: PASQAL, a European champion in neutral atom technologies, and Planqc, a German company following a similar path.

The researchers outline two key areas of value that quantum simulation currently offers: the ability to explore relevant problems in condensed matter physics, such as the behaviour of magnetic materials, and the potential to address broader challenges in optimisation and machine learning using the same hardware and tools. Bridging the gap between laboratory prototypes and industrial products, including improvements in robustness, fidelity and standardisation, is identified as one of the most critical steps ahead.

Looking towards the end of the decade, the project's second phase, SGA2, aims to complete the transition to machines ready for deployment in industrial and academic settings and to demonstrate a practical quantum advantage. Much like classical computing decades ago, today's quantum systems are limited but science and industry are already building on their capabilities, and PASQuanS2 is working to ensure Europe is positioned at the forefront of this development.

The video is available on the PASQuanS2 YouTube channel.
